To he who finds it….  I have fled this town for a clear reason.  We are a proud family of freethinkers, with notable exceptions, however, the persistent appearance of “the devil’s mark” leaves me little choice but to depart Collinsport.  First on my hand and then on that of Josette, whatever curse is upon us is beyond science to comprehend.  I invoke science to distance myself.  In truth, I simply must distance myself from that rarest of women.

My honor, my word, my fealty to my nephew?  These are rendered nothing but a lie unless I escape.  What I do, I do for the Collins family and my cherished nephew, Barnabas.
